The only escapes from Auckland’s humidity this summer have been my air-conditioned car, and the beach. A couple of weekends ago, the Big T and I had a mini road trip to the Awhitu Peninsula, on the south head of the Manukau Harbour. It was a perfect, sunny day, with enough ocean breeze to keep us cool.
The lighthouse was first built in 1874 to guide mariners over the bar at the mouth of the Manukau Harbour. It seemed incredible, looking that the Heads on a beautiful day, that these waters could be treacherous to ships. On 7 February, 1863, the Manukau Heads was the scene of New Zealand’s worst maritime disaster, when the HMS Orpheus sank with the loss of 189 lives.

I agree! Thank goodness for air conditioning! Lovely shots – that first one in particular is fab.

The summer looks wonderful there, Su, do you get much of a winter?

Auckland is subtropical. In winter, localised temperatures can drop to around 0 degrees Celsius, but average temps, city-wide tend to be around 7-8 degrees C. It rains a lot, and we get a few big storms that are the tail end of tropical cyclones. Cheers, Su.

Wonderful images. Seeing Wattle Bay brought back the memories. I grew up in Lynfield. There was a small track that went down to the beach – it was very private. We went there a lot after school and in the summer. It would be very different now.

Thanks Raewyn. We went was the other Wattle Bay, on the South Head. I haven’t been to Wattle Bay on the north side for thirty years. At uni, I worked on a research project involving all the beaches on the Manukau, and remember going to both Wattle Bays — it was so confusing for the researchers I think we numbered them! Manukau beaches are much busier now, but also much cleaner. Hope all well with you.

Interestingly, I never view NZ as a place of humidity, but, since you say Auckland is sub-tropical, now I know!
