It started badly, my week. I was expecting the Big T home from a conference in Detroit on Monday morning, but it turned out he’d got the day wrong and instead arrived on Tuesday. Monday was Auckland Anniversary Day — a long weekend — and if I’d known I’d be flying solo for the whole weekend, I would probably have organised my time differently. So while I’m not normally a Carpenters fan, Rainy Days and Mondays pretty much says it all on that score.
When T did get home, he brought with him a horrible flu. He’s spent the week trying to both recover, and play catch-up at work. Menu planning has involved as many variations on nutritious soft food that I can think of, because his throat has been so sore. Our plan to enjoy summer date nights have been abandoned.
The boy-child has been enjoying his last week of holiday, so we haven’t seen much of our little creature.
It’s definitely been a week that’s needed some comic relief.
And of course, this morning the Big T left for two weeks in Japan. He’s better, but not completely, and I’m already feeling a bit lost without him.

Thank you Angeline; it’s going to be a busy few weeks. I have a couple of reports to finish for work, and we’re heading off on holiday in just under three weeks. San Fransisco, Munich, Bordeaux, London. So excited and so much to do!!!!

Excellent musical choice! My friend Denise’s voice sounds so much like Karen’s it’s uncanny.

Thank you. She did have a wonderful voice; I’m envious of your friend Denise. I sing tunelessly but with great enthusiasm!

I’d like to think so; not sure my poor boys would agree. They have to share the house with me. Haha!

Mark my words, the day will come when they look back fondly on your singing, recognizing it for what it is: one of the many ways you express your love for them being in your life. It could be they already do and haven’t told you yet!

That is a lovely comment; thank you. It reminded me that I used to sing The Mamas and the Papas’ “Dream a Little Dream” to my son when he was a baby and it could soothe him. We still sing along to it together. Thanks π

We doing doing well. My son got his UE and NCEA Level 3 and so is off to EIT in a couple of weeks. My daughter leaves us to go to Wellington to uni there. We are settled in our new house and in regular contact with Women’s Refuge for safety reasons. My ex doesn’t know where we live now which has made a big difference. Onwards and Upwards for us.

That is fantastic! Congratulations to your son, and good luck to both your children. I’m glad you are feeling better, safer and supported. π

I am now getting involved again at church with a different group who don’t know my ex. It is relaxing not to have to think of what not to say all the time. My son also got a scholarship as well. If we had stayed together he told me he would have dropped out of school and left home. Once we did leave his school marks improved and now he knows where he wants to go. i am very proud of both of them

Almost Joanne; except that the boy-child and I DIDN’T get the flu. For which we are VERY grateful. π

good point – that is something to be grateful for. For some reason, having the flu in summer would be worse. Stay healthy π

Isn’t he brilliant! I love his stand-up, but the videos made with the Lego figures are even better. Check out “Cake or Death” and “Death Star Canteen.” π

Revisiting old posts, I realise how much the Big T’s travel sets the rhythm of our life. He is off to Detroit in a few days, knowing that when he gets back his feet will barely touch the ground before he flies out to Melbourne. At least this time he is free of the lurgy, so hopefully his travels will be less stressful this time.

It sets a whole different rhythm to life that can be challenging to change when the travel stops. It’s easy to understand how some relationships don’t survive.

I like the Playlist of the Week idea. Funnily enough, I was just listening to the Carpenters yesterday and singing along (in the car, alone, so no-one’s hearing was harmed). I know they are cheesy but I have always loved Karen’s voice. John travels a fair bit too and I don’t like it when it “wastes” a holiday weekend. Mind you, since I retired I don’t notice them so much!

Thanks Anabel. I like the idea too and keep meaning to do a few of them as posts. This year T has been home in January for the first time in the last 12 or so years. Working for a northern hemisphere company has always meant meetings and conferences in their winter, so he misses big chunks of our summer. He’s managed to time this latest trip to avoid being away on Waitangi Day (tomorrow) — our national day — but I think it took some organising!
